Blessed are the poor in spirit...
The charism of the Congregation today is the very same charism
with which the Holy Spirit gifted our foundress, Blessed Jeanne
Jugan. It is the evangelical spirit of the Beatitudes, of Jesus
who was “gentle and humble of heart.” It is a charism
of joyful simplicity and loving service to the “little
ones.” Following in the footsteps of our Mother is for
us both a joy and a challenge.
Centered in Christ
As a young woman, Jeanne Jugan belonged to a lay movement which
had been founded by St. John Eudes, one of the great masters
of the French school of spirituality. From him she learned that “Christian
life is a continuation of Jesus’ actions... we must be
so many other Christs on earth, in order to continue here his
life and work... (and) religious consecration means to make profession
of having but one life, one heart, one soul and one will with
Jesus.” Her own words to the novices reveal just how much
her life was centered to Christ. “Allow Our Lord to work
in you... All for you, my Jesus... My good Jesus, I have only
you.”
Gentle and Humble of Heart
Jeanne placed herself in the school of Jesus, who said, “Learn
from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart... I came not to be
served, but to serve.” She expressed this attitude of soul
by the word “littleness,” and she taught the Little
Sisters that the imitation of Christ, “gentle and humble
of heart,” was their portion in the Church: “To be
good Little Sisters, we must be very little, very humble...”
Daughters of Jeanne Jugan, we believe that witnessing to the humility
and self-emptying of Christ remains an essential aspect of our
charism.
